Offer Free Heart Screenings for Young Athletes

Flower Mound, Texas-March, 2011-Championship Hearts Foundation, a Texas nonprofit agency, and Texas Health
Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound, will offer FREE heart screenings for student athletes ages 14-18, on Saturday
March 26th, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital  Flower Mound.  Active students
who engage in athletics, cheerleading, marching band, drill team, or other strenuous sports are encouraged to get their
heart screened for possible deadly genetic heart conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

“Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart condition that usually doesn’t impair physical activity, but it is a set up
for a potentially fatal rhythm problem that could happen right on the playing field,” says Dr. George Rodgers, President
of Championship Hearts Foundation.  “HCM is very difficult to pick up during a physical examination, but is very easily
detected with an echocardiogram.”

The Championship Hearts screening includes a 10-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and a limited two-dimensional
echocardiogram (picture of the heart) to detect Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) the leading cause of sudden
cardiac death in young athletes.  Both the ECG and ECHO are non-invasive and painless and are valued over $700.
Results of the screening are immediate.

This free event is made possible in part, by the complimentary use of facilities and equipment at Texas Health
Presbyterian Hospital of Flower Mound, and the volunteer time of cardiologists from Cardiovascular Specialists. The
Athletics Department at Lewisville Independent School District is a strong proponent of this heart screening initiative.
Over 12,000 students have been screened by Championship Hearts during the last decade, with approximately 1% of
those having been referred for further cardiac testing.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to accompany their student during the tests. Registration will be available online
at: www.championshipheartsfoundation.org/heart-screenings/screening-events and clicking the ‘Registration’ link. Free
parking is available in the hospital parking lot.

Students must have a signed parental waiver in order to receive the heart screening.  That waiver will be available at the
event and is also available to print from the Championship Hearts website at:  www.championshipheartsfoundation.org
There is no charge for the screening, however, a (tax deductible) contribution of $25.00 is appreciated to help defray
some of the costs and also to support the work of the Foundation. For more information, visit the Foundation’s website
or call (888) 884-6945.
